Scenario: You just developed a research question for your speech. Now you need to find outside sources to support your arguments and further your thinking. 

Task: It's time to conduct a search on one of the library's databases! You will need to develop keywords and synonyms. 

Was your search successful? What source types are available? What do they look like? 

Directions:

  1. Break into your groups (break out room)
  2. Go to the slide with your group number
  3. Read your research question and determine the keywords
  4. Determine at least two sets of synonyms
  5. Conduct a search in your assigned database 
  6. Copy/Paste the titles of ONE scholarly article and ONE popular article (Hint: You may need to filter the results, i.e Academic Journals, Scholarly/Peer Reviewed, Magazines, Newspapers...)
  7. Come back as a group, share out to compare...

Academic Search Complete

Use Academic Search to search for articles on almost any topic. For example, if you're focusing on Texting while Driving use the search box to find scholarly articles using keywords such as "texting" or "cell phones", along with your angle, such as "alcohol".

Click Full Text on the left so you can read articles online.

Click Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) to read academic, peer reviewed articles.
