Alternative Educational Resources During COVID-19

We at Annual Reviews have been thinking about how to help the many students, faculty and researchers that are working and studying remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. To assist them, on Monday, March 16th we will temporarily remove access control to our content.

APA: PsychLearn. With many instructors being asked to deliver course material in an online environment due to COVID-19, we are extending our offer of free access to PsycLearn: Research Methods and PsycLearn: Introduction to Social Psychology. Instructors in the U.S. may use these products with their students at no cost in summer term classes that start before June 30, 2020. If you would like to use this material in your course, please contact the library.
Academic Writer tutorials and quick guides
Teach and learn effective writing with Academic Writer. During the pandemic, many of the Academic Writer tutorials and quick guides are being made freely available until July 1, 2020 to support students and instructors in courses that require papers to be written in APA Style. For information on or questions about Academic Writer, please visit the APA Digital Learning website.
To support academic libraries and their patrons, APA is participating in the ProQuest Ebook Central program to provide unlimited access through June 19 to APA books that are included in Ebook Central. We are also participating in the EBSCO eBooks program and that allows an unlimited number of simultaneous ebook users through the end of June.

The JWU Community has access to Bloomsbury Fashion Business Cases; Berg Fashion Library ; Fashion Video Archive; Bloomsbury Food Library; and Bloomsbury Design Library through the end of May 2020. Access to these resources is also available through the library's Quick Links Databases listing.

Cambridge University Press is offering free, online access to higher education textbooks and coronavirus research during the COVID-19 outbreak. In addition, existing customers are being offered free access to key reference works on request to help them overcome the disruption caused by the global response to the pandemic.
All 700 textbooks published and currently available in HTML format on Cambridge Core are available regardless of whether textbooks were previously purchased. Free access is available until June 29, 2020.

JSTOR and our publishing partners are committed to serving the scholarly community during this challenging time in which researchers are unable to access print monograph collections. Together, we are making a collection of 30,000 ebooks freely available through June 30, 2020, for our academic and secondary school participants that do not license the ebooks through JSTOR.

Harvard University Press recently announced that it is making its subscription free to all schools and universities affected by COVID-19 until June 30, 2020. Librarians should email Loeb Classical Library Sales for more details. In addition, SCS members can access the library for free until June 30, 2020 via the For Members Only page of our website. Log on to Loeb Classical Library and access the For Members only page via our Membership menu.

The Metropolitan Opera announced that it would stream encore presentations from the award-winning Live in HD series of cinema transmissions on the company website for the duration of the closure. The new offering will begin on Monday, March 16 with the 2010 HD performance of Bizet’s Carmen. All “Nightly Met Opera Streams” will begin at 7:30pm and will remain available via the homepage of metopera.org for 20 hours. The homepage link will open the performance on the Met Opera on Demand streaming service. The performance will also be viewable on all Met Opera on Demand apps.

To support our library partners and the need for faculty and students to conduct remote learning, we are now offering complimentary access to MIT Press eBooks on MIT Press Direct (https://direct.mit.edu) through the end of May 2020.

To address our unprecedented global and immediate need for access to reading and research materials, as of March 24, 2020, the Internet Archive will suspend waitlists for the 1.4 million (and growing) books in our lending library by creating a National Emergency Library to serve the nation’s displaced learners. This suspension will run through June 30, 2020, or the end of the US national emergency, whichever is later.

During the waitlist suspension, users will be able to borrow books from the National Emergency Library without joining a waitlist, ensuring that students will have access to assigned readings and library materials that the Internet Archive has digitized for the remainder of the US academic calendar, and that people who cannot physically access their local libraries because of closure or self-quarantine can continue to read and thrive during this time of crisis, keeping themselves and others safe.

Epigeum, part of Oxford University Press, has two courses designed for instructors who are taking their first foray into online teaching.
To support you at this time, we are making these two online training programs, Teaching Online and Blended Learning, freely available through the end of May.
Teaching Online presents the fundamental principles of online pedagogy, guiding users through the “nuts and bolts” of designing, delivering, and evaluating online courses for the first time. It also includes a stand-alone course to support students in making the most of their online learning experience.

Blended Learning explores the strategic and practical implications of integrating face-to-face and online methods in teaching and learning, covering a range of models and approaches, and including advice on fostering a blended learning culture.
How to access the programs for free:

2. Use the drop-down user menu in the top right corner to register as a new user

Paris Musées, a collection of 14 museums in Paris have recently made high-res digital copies of 100,000 artworks freely available to the public on their collections website. Artists with works in the archive include Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso, Cézanne, and thousands of others.

Project MUSE is pleased to support its participating publishers in making scholarly content temporarily available for free on our platform. Among the almost 40 publishers currently opting to make content free on Project MUSE are Johns Hopkins University Press (all books and journals), Ohio State University Press (all books and journals), University of Nebraska Press (all books and journals), University of North Carolina Press (all books), Temple University Press (all books), and Vanderbilt University Press (selected books). We expect to announce additional participants and will continually update the list.
Content that is freely available on the Project MUSE platform during the COVID-19 crisis will display a distinctive “Free” icon.

ProQuest Central is the largest single periodical resource available, bringing together complete databases across all major subject areas, including Business, Health and Medical, Language and Literature, Social Sciences, Education, Science and Technology, as well as core titles in the Performing and Visual Arts, History, Religion, Philosophy, and includes thousands of full-text newspapers from around the world.

ProQuest has partnered with more than 150 publishers to support libraries in providing unlimited access to Ebook Central holdings for all patrons – at no extra charge.
ProQuest Ebook Central customers impacted by COVID-19 get unlimited access to all owned titles from these publishers through mid-June. This means that all licenses – including single-user and three-user models – have automatically converted to unlimited access for that period, The unlimited access also applies to additional titles purchased through mid-June. No action is required by librarians to switch on unlimited access – this will be done automatically, and the transition will be seamless for users. Participating Publishers

The 256 textbooks currently on ScienceDirect will be automatically entitled to all active ScienceDirect customers (including those journals customers who do not currently have books) for a period of 90 days. Users accessing ScienceDirect through IP or remote access will be able to use these books while campuses are closed. Updated March 18, 2020.
Johnson & Wales University is a ScienceDirect Customer. Patrons can either go through the Databases Quick Link on the library's homepage to ScienceDirect Journals (and search by title) to access these textbooks, or search by the title URL provided by ScienceDirect on their list.
