📚 Database Share Out Activity

Purpose

This activity helps you explore JWU Library databases to find credible information for your research project. You’ll practice identifying what each database offers, discover at least one useful source, and create a correct MLA citation.

Instructions: Google Doc

  1. Enter your research topic on the class list and type your name beside it.

  2. Explore each of the databases listed below:

    • Opposing Viewpoints

    • CQ Researcher

    • Statista

    • Global Road Warrior

    • Credo Reference

  3. In each section, answer all questions in your own words.

  4. Add one MLA citation for a useful source you found.

  5. Ask one question about using or searching in that database.

When finished, read what others have posted so you can compare what each database does best.

The JWU library has two style guides:

MLA Style Guide

APA Style Guide

Follow these tips when verbally citing sources in a speech or presentation:

Your verbal citation should be brief but highlight the most important information: who, what and when.

  • Author

  • Author Credentials

  • Title of work (article, report, etc.)

  • Date of work (if relevant)

Use an introductory phrase:

  • "According to Professor Dumbledore at Hogwarts University..."

  • "Rita Skeeter, a journalist with the Daily Prophet, wrote in her 2014 article..."

  • “In his 2005 commencement address at Stanford University Steve Jobs said, ‘Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.’”
