(NOTE: This is a hypothetical example. Most dates for websites are located at the bottom of the home page - also known as copyright date. If the date is shown as a range, i.e., 1999-2009, use the most recent date = 2009.)

Paper Format Overview

Title Page (Not required by MLA): Although MLA does not require a separate title page, the instructor may. If a title page is required, center the title with no quotes or underlining if it is your own title. In addition to the title of the paper, include student's name, professor's name, course number, and date the paper is due, in the bottom right corner.

First Page: (standard MLA procedure with no title page) Include, in the upper left hand corner of the first page (as header): student's name, professor's name, course number, and the date the paper is due.

Pagination (page numbers): Each page of your research paper must include your last name and page number in the upper right corner. Include page numbers on first page and works cited page. Use Header/Footer function in MS Word to format.

Margins: Use 1" margins at the top, bottom, left and right margins. Students should not hyphenate words at the end of a line.

Paragraphs: Indent 5 spaces for each new paragraph.

Spacing: Double space entire paper.

Font Size & Type: 12 Pt Font, Times New Roman throughout the paper. No fancy fonts.

Appendix: The appendix is used to include any additional information such as charts, tables, figures, and survey results. The appendix comes before the Works Cited page.
