Getting Your Course Ready

ulearn  Requirements

Every course offered by Johnson & Wales University has an online presence in ulearn, our Blackboard-based learning management system.  You are responsible for meeting the 3 minimum requirements for every course in ulearn:

1. Post your course syllabus in ulearn (and email a copy of the syllabus to the Administrative Assistant).
2. Create grade columns and post grades in ulearn's grade center.
3. Make your course available by the first day of class. If you used ulearn in prior terms, consider requesting a course copy.

Additionally, your ulearn course site is the official place for you to provide electronic content and information to your students. For more ulearn help visit our uLearn User Guides for Faculty page, or email idt@jwu.edu with questions or to set up training with an instructional technologist.

uSucceed Requirements

uSucceed is an early alert, retention and advising system. uSucceed minimum requirements for faculty are

  • Set up faculty profile:
    • Post office hours (often “an hour prior to class” works for adjuncts, as does “by appointment.”)
    • Location (you can use SOE offices, or, if available, your scheduled classroom)
    • Campus contact information (some are willing to share a cell or work number; others stick to email communication here)
  • Complete surveys: Complete an initial attendance survey and two progress surveys throughout the term.  Be sure to notify School of Education staff directly of any attendance or academic issues.  For doctoral courses, please notify the Director if you have any concerns with attendance or academic performance.  For more uSucceed help visit our uSucceed User Guides for Faculty page.

Textbooks

All textbook orders should be placed directly with the JWU Bookstore. Please email Molly Peabody, manager at the Harborside bookstore, include your course name and number, the book title, edition and year, publisher, and ISBN number.  If you are not using a textbook, the bookstore manager will need to know that as well. Please copy the department Academic Administrative Coordinator in on the email.  Any changes in the required textbook must be communicated via email to Karen Swoboda, with a brief explanation as to the reason for the change, as soon as possible, prior to the start of class.  Please note that students are not required to purchase texts from the bookstore.
