Alternative Course Materials

Alternative Course Materials are different than OER (Open Education Resources)

Examples of Alternative Course Materials:

  • Library Subscription Materials (freely available to select users)
    • Articles or Ebooks from JWU Library databases: These are proprietary materials, freely accessible to JWU users only. 
    • They can be used as a replacement or supplement to course materials. 
    • Original copyright restrictions apply. 
  • Freely Accessible Materials
    • Online lectures, videos, readings, and assignments.
    • They can be used as a replacement or supplement to course materials. 
    • Original copyright restrictions apply. 

How is it different than OER?

  • Retain: Original copies for personal use only.
  • Reuse:  Content cannot be reused in an altered form.
  • Revise: Content cannot be revised or altered.
  • Remix: The original content cannot be combined with other content to create something new.
  • Redistribute: Copies of the content cannot be shared with others beyond Fair Use policies for educational purposes.
