Scenario: You have to write a paper for a equine class on the topic of blemish research. You need at least 2 credible, scholarly sources, drawn from one of the following sources.

Using the handout, work with your team to evaluate the source you've been assigned to teach your classmates how to find information for the Blemish Research essay.

Is your source useful for the Blemish Research essay?

Pro-Tip: Each team evaluates ONE of the following sources:

Group 1 Google Scholar

  • Use keywords instead of full sentences
  • Use quotes to search for an exact match
  • Add the year to the search phrase to get articles published in a particular year.
  • Quick full text-access options - can often be available at JWU (look on the right hand side)
  • Note the "cited by" feature, which can tell you how popular it is and lead you to more articles!

Group 2 Science Direct

  • Search for article topic
  • Click "View full text"
  • Select "Get Access"
  • Order Document

Best Practices for Citing Sources in Presentations

Why do I need to cite my sources in a presentation?
• Credible sources show that you have done your research and reinforce your own credibility.
• Giving credit to your sources links you to an ongoing scholarly conversation. By identifying where you got your ideas, you enable your own readers to find the sources that you used if they want to learn more.
• JWU's Academic Honesty Policy lists plagiarism as a violation of University policy, as well as one of personal integrity.

How do I cite my sources in a visual presentation?
• Include a citation for any content, quotes, or ideas from another source. The citation should be located either next to the information or below it.
• Cite in the text and provide a list of citations at the end.

Did you know you can copy and paste citations if you use the library's databases?

1. Save time -  look for the "Cite" Button or " " icon.

2. Scroll to the style you need (MLA)

3. Copy and paste the full citation into your paper

Ta Da!  You're done!  Well, almost.  Sometimes weird formatting issues happen, so always double check your work.
