To research effectively, you need a search strategy. By the end of this activity, you will practice searching in a database, creating a search strategy, and adjusting your search strategy, depending on your database.

Open this Google Doc: Work with your team to evaluate the database you've been assigned to teach your classmates how to find information for the city essay.

To begin, consider your search strategy. Will you start with your city or the topic or both? What kinds of sources are you hoping to find? News? Statistics? Academic articles? Reports on the broader topic? Audio, video or images? How can students adjust the date to ensure all resources are updated?

As a team, find an article or statistic to share out. Is your source useful for the essay? Add your thoughts to the Google Doc

Academic Search Complete

Use Academic Search to search for articles on almost any topic. For example, if you're focusing on Texting while Driving use the search box to find scholarly articles using keywords such as "texting" or "cell phones", along with your angle, such as "alcohol".

Click Full Text on the left so you can read articles online.

Click Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) to read academic, peer reviewed articles.

The JWU library has two style guides:

MLA Style Guide

APA Style Guide

However, if you need more in depth guidance on formatting go to the Purdue OWL
