Top Tips for Working with the Writing Lab:

Scenario: You have to write a short paper for a media communications class on the topic of how meditation and yoga reduce stress and impacts academic success for college students.

Using the ABCD criteria on your handout, work with your team to score the source you are assigned. Assign your source a numerical score from 1 (horrible) to 10 (excellent) for each criteria and add in comments for share-out on this Google Doc.

Authority (1-10)     Bias/Balance (1-10)     Currency (1-10)     Documentation (1-10

Consider: Can a source be credible, without being peer-reviewed? Who counts as an "authority" on a topic? Can a source be credible if focused on a specific aspect of a topic? Is your source credible?

Academic Search Complete

Use Academic Search to search for articles on almost any topic. For example, if you're focusing on Texting while Driving use the search box to find scholarly articles using keywords such as "texting" or "cell phones", along with your angle, such as "alcohol".

Click Full Text on the left so you can read articles online.

Click Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) to read academic, peer reviewed articles.
